House M.D. - Interesting Facts You Probably Didn't Know

The StudioVox Crew
  • The character of Gregory House is strongly based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, particularly with his addiction to drugs and his desire to solve the insolvable. The number of House’s apartment, 221B, is a reference to Holmes’s street address.
  • Hugh Laurie shot his audition tape for the show in a hotel bathroom, it provided the most light.
  • Patrick Dempsey aka Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd, on Grey's Anatomy was considered for the role of House before being cast as "McDreamy" on Grey's Anatomy.
  • By mid-series Hugh Laurie was starting to physically suffer from constantly limping. It caused a problem with his other auditions and roles as well, as every time he heard "rolling" he would automatically limp, regardless of the role.
  • The series employed doctors as consults to make sure the content was medically accurate. The most accurate episode according to doctors who watched the show was the season two episode "Clueless" wherein a man nearly suffocates when his tongue swells during sex. It ends up that his wife was poisoning him with gold sodium thiomalate, an old arthritis treatment.
  • Hugh Laurie was behind the idea for House to wear sneakers. The costume department had 37 pairs of Nike running shoes for him to choose from.
  • Hugh Laurie originally thought that James Wilson was the lead when he read the pilot, not House. He couldn't imagine someone like House being the star of a show.
  • Hugh Laurie's father is a doctor and Laurie has felt guilty over the idea of being paid more than his father to simply play a fake version of him.
  • The name House is also a nod to the medical acronym HOUSE (History Of USE) used to denote when a patient has a history of drug use or addiction.
  • The show was nominated and won multiple awards. 9 Golden Globes (winning 2), 25 Prime-time Emmy Awards (winning 5), 16 Teen Choice Awards (winning 1) and 1 Peabody (which it won).
