The StudioVox Crew
Each week, StudioVox selects 5 artists, photographers, illustrators or designers from our community whose work inspires us creatively. Whether for its beauty, humor, detail, or the story behind the workStudioVox features artists we love that we think you'll enjoy too.
Our 5 talented artists this week, fall into a creative field broadly recognized as "Concept Artist". Sometimes referred to as Character Designers, Animators, Illustrators, or Digital Artists, whatever they choose to call their specialization, each one has a unique style that makes their work memorable and distinct.

Concept Artist - Hamberg, Germany
Cedric Wurm is a full-time concept artist at a game studio.  Raised in France and Switzerland, he's been playing video games for as long he can remember. Growing up, he had a lot of hobbies that tended to revolve around the same themes - writing stories about fantasy worlds, painting Warhammer figurines, making super low-resolution pixel art at a website called Pixeljoint.com. Over middle school and high-school, the idea of becoming an artist and working in the game industry crystallised in his head and he ended up going to Falmouth University in England, to study illustration.

"What I love most about games is the directness with which they transport you into beautiful worlds," he says.  "Books, music and movies also do this of course, and each medium has its strengths in doing this slightly differently, but I was always drawn to games because of the high level of player/content interaction - you become more than an observer, you actively affect this fantasy world. Some games are incredibly immersive in this way, and can awaken an almost childlike sense of wonder and playfulness that is often out of place in regular adult life. How refreshing!!"

Cedric likes bringing out the same kind of feelings when he's creating art. "I love the sense of discovery that comes with creating an interesting character or environment, the process of slowly finding out what a character’s oddities are, or the details of how an environment is made," he says.  "What kind of beings live in this world? How do they interact with each other? Mostly, I have in my free time been doing standalone pieces here and there. Moving on, I hope to take on some long-term projects where I can delve deeper, and carve out a world more convincingly, perhaps through a story, or a series of illustrations… who knows."
